Chapter 4 “be careful when fighting monsters, lest you become one”

The hot sun beat down on us once again, sweat dripped from every pore, even the undead we’d run into occasionally seemed at least a little pissed off by it. I considered it a mercy killing to bash his skull in that time. “So we’re going to Canada now?” Chris finally broke the relative silence with “Think about it man, no one really lived up there, we can build a cabin and live like hunters.” “That’s retarded.” He said quickly, almost annoyed at the idea. “So you like scavenging? Eating every other day?” I asked, trying to put things in perspective. “It never gets old.” He replied stubbornly, “That is true” I finally agreed. I think I’ll drop this for now; Chris was always better at arguments. The sun got covered by grey clouds; I knew soon I’d feel an all too welcome rain hit my face.

The rain was falling hard now; we had reached my old home town of Spanaway. I recognized an old landmark, Bethel High School. There was blood everywhere and bodies littered the ground like chewed up bubblegum; that must’ve been a fun day at school. I think I can see eyes on the other side of that window, staring at me. I don’t like this place, we should walk faster. A human face was peering through a window. I’m sure of it. From now on I’m going to keep looking forward; all this paranoia did no one any good.

We had picked up the pace at my behest, that area held too many memories. As we walked I could see the entrance to a gated community, “look at that.” I said, pointing at the sign. It looks like it might’ve said something “crescent view” or “aurora fields” resembling, but it had been painted over “PHEONIX” in big black paint. We started walking toward it; we could see a makeshift guard tower with a man peering at us inside. Our postures straightened and we tried to look as alive as possible. When we got to the gate I tried talking to the man “Excuse me.” He looked down at us “yes?” “What’s this here?” I could see inside the gate a man was walking down the sidewalk without a care in the world, I had a guess what this place was. “When that big catastrophic event happened, out of sheer luck the disease affect very little of us in the community, so we took care of the few that were and renamed this town phoenix, as we will-“ “rise from the ashes?” I interrupted “Well yeah that was what we were going for.” He answered, annoyed at my interruption.

“Can we come in?” I asked next, using the least threatening voice I had, still a little threatening unfortunately. “Yes, but we have a special inn you have to sleep a night in so know you aren’t infected.” “Oh so you know about that, okay, sounds fair.” I replied, he climbed his ladder down off his tower and unlocked the gate, opening it slowly. “Go straight ahead until you see a bright red house, can’t miss it, it’s about two stories tall.” “Alright see ya” I called back as we started walking passed the gate, I could see him locking it behind us. “A new town, Can you believe it?” I asked as we walked “when I see it.” I stepped in front of him and pointed to a handful of people we passed by “Shut up” he laughed as he stepped around me.

When we reached the bright red house which had “INN” hastily spray painted over the door, I knocked politely “We can’t let these people know we’re assholes” I said with a grin. An old, grey, façade of a woman answered the door, my smile was gone. “Need rooms?” creaked out of her head after a long silence “uhh, yeah, that’d be great.” I answered after an even longer one. She made a strange gesture which I guess in her old, dying world meant “this way please.” We cautiously ascended the stairs where she opened a door, the room was surprisingly……roomy. Two beds, I tried mine out and just laid there a bit, before I knew it I was asleep.
